  • Turkey Disguises -- 11-25-08
We know that most people want a turkey for Thanksgiving Dinner. We tried to help the turkeys by disguising them so no one would be able to find them for Thanksgiving. Thank you to our families for helping with our family homework. We hope you enjoy our turkeys. We shared them with our new kindergarten friends in Sandusky, Ohio by having a video chat with them. They did the same project. We enjoyed seeing their turkeys. They had some that we very similar to ours.

  • Our Blogging Mentors -- 11-23-08

We have blogging mentors from the University of Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada. They connect to our classroom by commenting on this blog. We are thrilled to have made such good friends through blogging. We fondly refer to them as our college friends from Canada.

On Friday, we met and chatted Amy and Janine, two of our U of Regina friends through a video skype call. It is like using the computer to make a phone call and we can see each other while talking. We had a little bit of trouble with our video connection and then Amy and Janine had some trouble. We went outside to play while waiting for them to get back in touch with us. Amy and Janine quickly solved the problem and we chatted for a bit before we had to go home. We love our blogging friends and hope we connect with other friends real soon.

We wondered about what they ate, about where they lived and about the different kinds of spiders. we read books and beagn to learn about spiders. We researched about different kinds and then wrote about what we learned. We presented our information to the class so we could teach each other about spiders. We wanted to share the information with you.

  • Our Flag For Antarctica -- 11-07-08

    our flag

Jeff Peneston is a teacher from NY who is going to Antarctica. He invited classrooms from around the country to make a flag that he can take with him aboard the icebreaker ship named Oden. Jeff will work with scientists in a program called PolarTREC. Jeff will fly the flags from everyone on the ship and take pictures for us to see. We will check on Jeff during his trip by reading his on line journal and looking at the pictures he takes. He will begin his trip on November 25. We are reading the journal of another PolarTREC teacher. She is Robin Ellwood and she is a teacher in Rye NH. She is part of a SCUBA diving crew working under the lake ice to collect information about the conditions on the bottom of the lake. We enjoy the pictures in Ms. Ellwood's on line journal.

  • Scarecrows -- 10-27-08
When we came to school on Monday, we noticed lots of scarecrows outside the school. Over the weekend, several families in town made them to decorate the school. The weather was beautiful on Monday so after recess, we walked around to look at the scarecrows. We liked them all but some of us have a favorite one.
Which one do you like best?

  • Comments and Questions -- 10-25-08
Thank you to family and friends for visiting our blog these past few weeks. We enjoy reading the comments and took time on Friday to answer some of the questions.

There were many comments about our voki for Voices of the World. We picked a horse for our voki because most people voted for it. At first we chose different animals but the horse got the most votes. We have lots of horses in Deerfield because our town is in the country. Some Kinderkids have horses at their house. Some Kinderkids ride horses.

We do not have any snow. We have frost and ice in the morning but we don?t have snow yet. This time of year, we have to wear a jacket to school in the morning but when we go home in the afternoon, we don't wear the jacket.

When we hike in the woods now we wear our orange vests for safety. This is the time for hunting. It is hunting season.

Keep asking questions and thanks for visiting our blog.

  • Collecting in the Woods -- 10-18-08
Last week we explored the trail by our school along Freese's Pond looking for interesting things to collect for the classroom. We noticed many colored leaves on the ground and collected some. We picked up sticks, pine cones, small rocks, soft moss and tree bark.

We looked at the collection after returning to our room. Some things were the same and others were different. We sorted most of the items so we could use them for making things. Later on, we will use make pictures with the items by gluing them down.

  • Stacking OreoŽ Cookies -- 10-14-08
The Kinderkids participated in a classroom project along with other classes around the world. In each classroom, each student stacked oreoŽ cookies as high as he or she could. An average of each student's highest result became the class result. In our class, the highest stack was 22 oreoŽ cookies and the lowest stack was 10. Our average was 16. 717 schools were in the project and 14,752 children were the stackers. There were students from 44 US states, Canada, Great Britain, Japan and the Virgin Islands. The average stack of all the results was 18.

Besides having lots of fun, we did lots of counting, comparing and creating. The stacking was part of math workshop and we think we did lots of math. We asked questions about how many, how high, and how few. After the "official" stacking, we made staircases, patterns and designs with the cookies. Mrs. Knee saved out some oreoŽ cookies so we could have a taste. Yummy Math!
